Biography of K1 De Ultimate
Alhaji Wasiu Omogbolahan Olasunkanmi Adewale Ayinde Marshal MON, known professionally as K1 De Ultimate, is a Nigerian Fuji musician. He was born on March 3, 1957, in Agarawu, Lagos State, Nigeria, and hails from Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, Nigeria.
He developed an interest in music at the age of eight and began his career despite initial parental opposition. By age 15, he had won several local musical competitions. He served as an instrument packer and later became a member of Ayinde Barrister’s band, the Supreme Fuji Commanders, from 1975 to 1978. He adopted the name Ayinde with his mentor’s permission and blessing.
He released his first album, Iba, which included the track Abode Mecca, in 1980. His most successful album, Talazo ’84, was released in 1984. He is credited with popularizing a brand of the Fuji genre known as “Talazo Fuji,” which appeals to all age groups regardless of tribe or background.
His international career began with a tour between North America and Europe in 1986. He made history in 1995 by delivering the first Fuji performance ever at the WOMAD Festival and is the only Fuji musician to perform at Troxy, WOMEX, and SOB’s. He has released over 80 albums.
He has been honored with numerous chieftaincy titles and recognition, including the Member of the Order of the Niger (MON) by President Muhammad Buhari on October 11, 2022. He was installed as the first Mayegun of Yorubaland by the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, on January 13, 2020, and crowned Olori Omo Oba Akile Ijebuland by King Sikiru Adetona Awujale of Ijebuland on September 26, 2023.
