Oliver Nayoka (born Okwudili Oliver Anisiobi) is a popular Nigerian singer, composer, and self-taught guitarist known for his significant contributions to the Igbo Highlife music genre.
Background and Musical Roots
Nayoka hails from Ekwulummili in the Nnewi South Local Government Area of Anambra State, Nigeria. His musical journey began early, playing the guitar in churches throughout the state.
His signature style is heavily influenced by the late legendary Highlife master guitarist, Oliver De Coque. Nayoka’s expertise in guitar playing, particularly his ability to fuse heavy Congolese guitar sounds, has earned him the nickname, the “Jimi Hendrix of highlife.”
Career and Style
After a brief hiatus to pursue business, Nayoka officially launched his singing career in 2006. He leads his own musical group, the ‘Talented fellows’ band of Africa’, emphasizing “Passion, Practice and Consistency” as their core principles.
Nayoka’s music is celebrated for its ability to breathe new life into classic highlife. He blends traditional Igbo Highlife with elements of Congolese rumba, creating energetic and highly danceable tracks that appeal to both local and international audiences.
